« My adventure of working for parts of 3 days at La Clinica Veterinaria de Chipie on Isla Mujeres actually started the evening before I was introduced to Dr. Delfino Guevara. I was dining with my husband and 2 friends at the home and business of Lolo Lorena. There we shared a most marvelous meal at a large table with 6 friendly strangers. By the end of the evening, we were no longer strangers. I learned that my new friend, Renee, was a great supporter of the animals of Isla (especially cats), and she learned that I was a veterinarian. We agreed to meet the next morning at Lolo’s bakery so that Renee could introduce me to the local veterinarian.
After a short walk, we arrived at the clinic and were greeted with the welcoming smiles of Dr. Delfino, as everyone seems to call him and his very nice assistant, Lorena. I was given a tour of the clinic where I saw the small pup being treated for parvo infection, the cat with the mysterious hair loss problem and the assortment of cats rescued from the streets, all in need of some medical care and new homes. Over the next two days, I returned to this welcoming environment. On days one and two, I was also privileged to ride with Dr. Delfino to make home visits, deliver pets and distribute cages for people interested in helping to trap feral cats. On day three, I noticed on my arrival that the van we had ridden in the previous days was not outside of the clinic. That day we made the visits on a motorbike. What fun!
I was impressed from the start with Dr. Delfino’s sincere interest in his patients and the great relationship he had with all the people I met through his practice. I have sealed my plans to return to Isla where I look forward greatly to spending more time with veterinary work (ala Isla!) and improving my Spanish! »
